- Five knockout rounds with 27 teams qualified through national leagues and cups.
- Five teams enter directly in the round of 16; the other 22 start in round one.
- The first four rounds (round one, round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals) are two-legged ties.
- The final is a single match; in 2026 it was hosted by the club with the better goal difference in earlier rounds.
- The champion qualifies directly for the FIFA Club World Cup (2029 for the 2026 winner) and the FIFA Intercontinental Cup.
- The Leagues Cup runner-up and third-place team also earn berths in the tournament.
