How UEFA Champions League 2014/15 works

The Champions League has used a 36-team league phase since 2024-25: each club plays eight matches against eight different opponents. The top eight go straight to the round of 16, 9th to 24th play a two-legged play-off, and the rest are out. From the round of 16 it is two-legged, with a single-match final.

36 teams in one table with no groups; each plays eight matches (four home, four away) against opponents drawn from the four pots.
The top eight in the league phase advance directly to the round of 16.
Teams in 9th to 24th meet in a two-legged knockout play-off (9-16 seeded, 17-24 unseeded); 25th to 36th and the eight play-off losers are eliminated.
The round of 16, quarter-finals and semi-finals are two-legged; the final is a single match at a pre-selected venue in late May or early June.
The winner qualifies for next season's Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup, the FIFA Intercontinental Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup.
