How MLS 2024 works
MLS has 30 clubs in two conferences, each playing 34 regular-season matches. The top nine in each conference make the playoffs: eighth and ninth play a wild-card game, round one is best-of-three, and every later round is a single match through MLS Cup.

Format
- 30 clubs play 34 matches each, mostly against teams in their own conference; the 2026 regular season runs February 21 to November 7 with a World Cup break.
- The team with the most points overall wins the Supporters' Shield.
- 2026 playoffs: the top nine in each conference qualify; the top seven go straight to round one and eighth and ninth play a single wild-card match.
- Round one is a best-of-three series; the conference semifinals, conference finals and MLS Cup are single matches with extra time and penalties.
- MLS Cup 2026 is scheduled for December 18; it is the last full spring-to-autumn season.
- MLS plans to move to a summer-to-spring calendar from 2027-28, with a 14-match short season in early 2027.
